As part of the ongoing Human Stories series, Another England opened at NOW Gallery on Greenwich Peninsula on 10 October. Developed in partnership with Historic England, the exhibition explores both historical and contemporary narratives of Black and Asian heritage in England, bringing together stories that have shaped the nation's cultural landscape.
Following our design for the previous edition, our studio was invited to reimagine and expand the exhibition into the largest photography show ever presented at NOW Gallery. The exhibition features more than 130 works spanning photography, film, archival material and ephemera, creating a rich and layered exploration of migration, faith, home, work and identity. Alongside these personal and collective histories, the exhibition also confronts the realities of racism and discrimination experienced by many communities throughout the last century.
At the heart of the exhibition is a series of newly commissioned works by contemporary photographers including Nina Manandhar, Sarah Maple, Theo White, Ruth Ossai and Saint Lovie, presented in collaboration with Adama Jalloh. These powerful perspectives sit alongside historical material, creating a dialogue between past and present while highlighting the diversity and complexity of Black and Asian experiences in England.
Through an immersive and carefully choreographed exhibition design, the project provides space for reflection, conversation and discovery, amplifying voices that have too often been overlooked and celebrating the stories that continue to shape contemporary Britain.
